A lot in Muscle Shoals can look easy until the bucket hits rock. Colbert County sits on the Highland Rim, so limestone and chert run close to the surface. A house pad, a pond or a driveway can stall the day a small machine finds stone. Plenty of work here is simpler: brush on a back acre, or an old barn that needs to come down.

The Shoals got its name from rock. Before Wilson Dam went in, the Tennessee River here fell about 130 feet over 37 miles across jagged stone. Wilson Lake covers those shoals now. The same rock is still under the ground on both sides of the river. Colbert County lies mostly in the Highland Rim, which is built on limestone and chert.
So a shovel or a small machine can find stone a foot or two down. Rock turns up when you cut a pad, dig a pond or set fence posts. Our trackhoes carry rippers, so we can break the rock loose and pull it out. Boulders get moved to the edge of the property or loaded and hauled off.
Solid bedrock ledge is a different job. Ripping works on layered and broken rock. A thick solid shelf needs other methods, and we say so when we see it. Building a pad up with fill often beats cutting down into stone.
Muscle Shoals sits on the south bank of the Tennessee River at Wilson Dam. Spring Creek, Cane Creek and smaller branches drain the county into the river. Ground near those creeks and along the bottoms holds water through winter and spring. Soft ground shows up fast on a long farm road or a drive that was never crowned.
Water is what decides whether dirt work holds up. We cut a crown on a gravel driveway so rain sheds to both sides. Ditches carry it away from the base instead of down the middle of the drive. Crusher run and chert are the common surface materials in this part of Alabama.
The same idea applies to a compacted house pad or a shop pad. We grade the ground so water runs away from the building on every side. On low or soggy spots we bring fill in with the dump trucks and build up in lifts. Each lift gets packed down before the next one goes on.
Land around Muscle Shoals goes back to brush fast when nobody keeps it cut. Chinese privet fills in fence lines and creek bottoms. Forest surveys find it on more Alabama land than any other shrub. Japanese honeysuckle climbs over the top of it, and cedar, sweetgum and pine take the open spots.
A back pasture can turn into a thicket in a few seasons. For a full clear we push and pile with the dozer, then pull stumps and roots with the trackhoe. Brush and debris load into the dump trucks and leave the property. The ground gets rough-graded so you can mow it, seed it or build on it.
Sometimes grinding is the better answer. Forestry mulching runs a mulching head over brush and small trees and leaves the chips on the ground. There are no burn piles and nothing to haul, and you keep the trees you want. It suits trails, shooting lanes, view corridors and grown-up pasture edges.
Muscle Shoals is the largest city in Colbert County, and building keeps pushing out toward the edges. New houses, shops and metal buildings go up on lots that used to be pasture or woods. That work starts with clearing the footprint and cutting a pad to grade. Dozer work handles the pushing, leveling and spreading of fill.
We also take small structures down with the trackhoe: old houses, barns, sheds, mobile homes, outbuildings and concrete slabs. The dump trucks load out the debris and the site gets left graded. Those same trucks bring fill dirt, topsoil, gravel, crusher run and chert in by the load.
Farm ponds are part of the work too. We dig new ponds, reshape old ones and clean out ponds that silted in. The dozer shapes the bank and spreads the spoil, or the trucks haul it off the place.
