A family buys a few acres off Cave Springs Road and plans a house on it. The lot slopes, the back half is grown up, and the ridge holds chert and rock. Before a builder can start, the ground has to be cleared and cut to grade. That is dirt work, and it is what we do around Priceville.

Priceville is the third largest municipality in Morgan County. The 2010 census counted 2,658 people. By 2020 that was 3,512, a jump of about 32 percent. The city now puts the number near 3,800.
The growth shows up on the ground. In 2022 the town rezoned 352 acres for a 774-home subdivision, Nature's Walk at Wheeler. That tract sits near Priceville High School, north of East Upper River Road and east of North Bethel Road. A forty-acre development is also planned at Cave Springs Road and the Marco Drive extension.
Most of that land was pasture, hayfield or woods first. Turning a tract into a homesite runs the same way each time. You clear the trees and brush off the footprint, then cut and pack a house pad on it. A dozer, a trackhoe and dump trucks do that work.
Priceville sits in the Tennessee Valley, on limestone. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System describes the valley soils here as red clay weathered from limestone. One of those soil series is named Decatur. In the Decatur series, limestone bedrock sits more than six feet down.
The ridges are a different story. Soil descriptions for the uplands call those soils cherty, with gravel running through them. As the land rises southeast toward Somerville, rock comes up closer to the surface. That is the ground that stops a post-hole digger or a builder's excavation.
Our trackhoes carry rippers for that. Pulling rock out of the ground is part of a lot of pads, driveways and ponds here. Boulders get moved, stacked at the edge of the lot, or hauled off. Solid bedrock ledge needs other methods, and we will say so when we hit it.
Flint Creek starts in northern Cullman County and runs north through Morgan County. It passes through Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and empties into the Tennessee River at Decatur. Wheeler Lake backs into the lower creek, so the water there rises and falls with the lake.
Decatur averages about 53 inches of rain a year. December is the wettest month. August through October are the driest. Wet winters leave soft ground and standing water on a flat lot.
Grade is what keeps that water off your building. A pad needs enough slope to carry rain away on every side. A gravel drive that sheds water needs a crown and a ditch beside it. On the pasture ground southeast of town, that same clay will hold a farm pond.
Plenty of Priceville land was farmed before it was platted. Old barns, sheds, mobile homes and concrete slabs sit on tracts that are being sold now. Demolition on that scale is a trackhoe and a dump truck. We tear the building down and haul the debris off.
Storms add work here. On May 20, 2025, the National Weather Service rated an EF-1 tornado at Priceville near 105 mph. Spring storms drop trees and leave brush piles across pasture and yards. Loading and hauling that off is dump truck work.
Ground that sits idle grows up fast. Chinese privet is the shrub found most often on Alabama forest land, and it takes over fence rows. Where you want roots and stumps gone, that is land clearing with the dozer and trackhoe. Where you want the brush ground into mulch and left in place, that is forestry mulching.
